Can’t Call Virginia

I can’t call Virginia this late
It’s almost morning there and I’m a wreck
I’m sure I’d slur the words I yearn to tell her
And by now that’s all she’s come to expect

I told her I’d be back one day to get her
We kissed knowing that our love was strong
But I quit writing when the booze took all my evenings
And her daddy always knew I’d do her wrong

That’s why I can’t call Virginia this late
It’s almost morning there and I’m a wreck
I’m sure I’d slur the words I yearn to tell her
And by now that’s all she’s come to expect

I never made the home I hoped to share with her
I didn’t know how quickly I would stray
I lose my nerve each time her mama answers
And Virgnia slips further away

That’s why I can’t call Virginia this late
It’s almost morning there and I’m a wreck
I’m sure I’d slur the words I yearn to tell her
And by now that’s all she’s come to expect
And by now that’s all she’s come to expect
