Desert Of My Heart

Look along the dry river bed
And you can still see where the river lead
There was gold up in those hills
She put candles on the window sills

Now the saddles are dusty and the spurs and buckles are rusted over
Tumbleweeds rustle and they roll by in the dark
The saloon is the only place open, it’s the only thing I know to do
Out here in the desert of my heart

I was waltzing with my angel for a while
She held us all together with a smile
Now I stumble home with the stars to light my way
Past the darkened doorways of yesterday

Now the sun’s burning right through the rooftops and most of the windows are boarded over
I cuss the vultures that keep circling my yard
The fences had long been crumbling before all the horses ran off
Out here in the desert of my heart

Where nothing ever gets water and nothing ever grows
I’m waiting for the storm that’s gonna take it all apart
And I’d watch for her at the station but the train don’t stop anymore
out here in the desert of my heart
out here in the desert of my heart
out here in the desert of my heart
